The Town of Lake Lure is home of over 1,200 permanent residents and sees many visitors each year who come to take in the towns picturesque views and countless activities.

Located in western North Carolina, the town sits in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge, about 27 miles from Asheville. The Rocky Broad River winds its way through a series of rapids down through Hickory Nut Gorge, and the crystal clear water flows through the valley that feeds Lake Lure, named one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the country. With the backdrop of  lush mountain tops and sheer granite cliffs, it's no question why the lake was awarded this accolade.

The Town of Lake Lure encompasses 13.25 square miles, including the lake with a large central body of deep water, three long bays, an island of seven acres, and many small bays and inlets with a background of forest-clad hills and mountains. 



Outdoor Activities

The Town of Lake Lure is a great location for sports, including swimming, golfing, hiking, or serious rock climbing. You can enjoy a wide variety of water activities, ranging from canoeing and fishing to pleasure boating and water skiing. Both motor and non-motorized boats enjoy the lake. 

The community also has two outstanding golf courses, Apple Valley and Bald Mountain, both are privately owned by Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure. Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure is replete with championship golf, hiking trails, fishing, water sports, beach, and dining.

Things to Do & See

After you've spent all day exploring the outdoors, you could enjoy of piece of history nestled right in Lake Lure, NC at the incredibly preserved Lake Lure Inn and Spa, or, roam the weekly farmer's market that takes place every Friday. The Lake Lure community is also home to a variety of restaurants, from fine dining to beloved home-style country cooking.  

Many visitors and residents also enjoy making a quick journey to the small town of Chimney Rock. Main Street is packed with a variety of shops, restaurants, ice cream stands, gem mining, old time photo studio and vintage motels. Find events and live music many times throughout the year at The Gathering Place, located on a plateau above the town with spectacular view of Chimney Rock mountain.

Local Schools

While a small community, Lake Lure, NC still hosts a great school to serve its residents. Lake Lure, NC is home to the Lake Lure Classical Academy, a tuition-free charter school, which serves 523 students in grades Kindergarten-12. Lake Lure Classical Academy placed in the top 50% of all schools in North Carolina for overall test scores and is in the top 20% of North Carolina schools for reading and language arts proficiency.

Fun Facts

The picturesque mountains and crystal clear waters of the lake at Lake Lure, NC have been the site of multiple classic movie scenes that you're sure to recognize. It has been a filming location for scenes from the movies Thunder Road, Dirty Dancing, A Breed Apart, The Last of the Mohicans, and Firestarter. There's even a Dirty Dancing Festival in September with loads of dancing, a screening of the film and even a legendary dancing lift competition just like the infamous movie scene.
